if you want to escape from the city for a while, one option to do so is to take a short trip to the pfaueninsel (peacock island) in the south-west. you can reach it by taking the bus number 218 from the s-bahn station wannsee and finally using a small ferry. it will bring you to enough wonderful nature for walking around a whole long afternoon. while doing so you'll most probably meet a few of the freely running around peacocks, discover the cheesy fake castle or other ruins and run across various beautiful flowers and strange trees like the one on the left with a big, locked door in its trunk, which is maybe the one to your phantasy thinking about what might be behind it. a few words about the history of this island: it was aquired by the end of the 18th century by the king of prussia and used as small zoo, menagerie, pleasure garden and summer residence. today it is open for the public. it is recommended to go there during the week, because then it is much more calm there than over the weekend.
